washington dc - day 3

The next day we had tickets for a White House tour.  These also had to be booked through our congressman months in advance and required a full background check.  Then when you arrive, you go through four ID/security checkpoints which took longer than the 20 minutes we spent inside the actual White House. You only get to look in or walk through about 8 rooms.

After lunch, we headed over to the American History Museum. Like all the Smithsonian museums, it was very large and very well done.  Unfortunately, none of us are history lovers.  But there were some cool items to see, such as the real Batmobile, Abraham Lincoln's top hat that he was wearing when he was assassinated, a display on Mormons (including a Nauvoo temple sunstone), the Gunboat Philadelphia which was sunk in 1776 and raised in 1935, and the original huge American flag that inspired The Star Spangled Banner (no photos allowed).  We were disappointed that the ruby red slippers were off display.

There were dozens of other rooms with displays, including Presidents, inventions, food, money, First Lady's dresses and an entire floor about transportation (boats, cars, planes).  It was overwhelming and exhausting!  We spent almost four hours in this museum and that was mostly just walking through, we didn't even stop to read much!  This was not our favorite day of the trip, but glad we did it.
